Formula Ford Top Speed
They used to say there was no substitute for cubic inches. Recently, a group of Ford engineers in Europe set out to dispute that "truth" with a special one-off road-legal Formula Ford race car fitted with a three-cylinder 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine that is used to power a large number of models in Fords' European range of cars.
The unique racer has recorded the 11th fastest lap ever at the Nürburgring's Nordschleife circuit – 7 minutes, 22 seconds – higher on the list than such 600+ horsepower supercars as the Lamborghini Aventador, Ferrari Enzo and the Pagani Zonda. No other three- or even four-cylinder car has posted a faster time at the legendary circuit.
Just to add weight to the accomplishment this was not a stripped down racer, instead it was made to be street legal with wheel covers, front and rear lights, turn signals, aerodynamically designed wing mirrors and a horn. The car is fitted with a 6-speed manual gearbox and was driven on road-legal tires.
Ford says the specially tuned 205 hp 1.0-liter EcoBoost-powered Formula Ford has an unofficial top speed of 159 mph and a 0-62 mph time of less than four seconds. Fuel economy is equally impressive with Ford claiming it can, unofficially, manage 94 mpg at 35 mph and 46 mpg at a steady 75 mph. Formula Ford racers are usually powered by a 1.6-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine producing 180 horsepower.
"We wanted to prove that size doesn'tmatter by showing everyone what an amazingly capable engine we have developed in the 1.0-liter EcoBoost," said Roelant de Waard, vice president of Marketing and Sales, Ford of Europe. "What better way than by beating some of the best supercars in the world on the Nordschleife, while using a fraction of the fuel."
